Snow Bonanza for South American Resorts August 13, 2008
Many of the popular ski resorts in the Andes Mountains of Chile and Argentina will have a big snowstorm in the next few days. A powerful Pacific storm will barrel into Chile on Thursday. Not only will this storm be carrying a lot of moisture, it also will be coming ashore well north of where many recent storms have tracked. The higher mountains of the Andes, where the most popular ski resorts are located, generally lie over west-central Argentina and central Chile.

Snow will gradually pick up in intensity on Thursday across major resorts like Valle Nevado, Portillo, Las Lenas and Las Termes de Chillan. Snow is expected to continue on Friday and Friday night, with blizzard conditions possible over higher elevations. Travel to the ski resorts will be very difficult, if not impossible, during the snowstorm. However, many slopes will be covered by 2-3 feet of new powder to kick off the weekend, while higher peaks can have at least twice this total. By AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Bob Tarr

Heavy Rain and Snow to Pound Chile  August 14, 2008
A moisture-laden storm will roar ashore Thursday in Chile. Rain will be heavy across central and southern portions of Chile. Heavy rain will continue through Friday. Santiago has only 48% of normal since June 1. They could easily pick up 2 inches from this system, bringing the total back near normal.

Rain could reach 3-4 inches in the foothills of the Andes. This will be enough to trigger at least localized flooding, and perhaps mudslides. The Andes mountains are lined with ski resorts. The mountains themselves tower nearly 20,000 feet above the coastal areas. The combination of a strong wind perpendicular to the mountains and abundant moisture will be phenomenal snowfall for the ski resorts. Snow will be measured in meters. Much quieter weather will arrive for the weekend.

Snow in Colorado 15 Aug 08 -

Seasonal roads above 11,000 feet such as Trail Ridge
Road will likely have to be shut down on Friday because of the snow.
According to the 9NEWS Weather Team, a very strong cold front will cause temperatures to drop 15 to 30 degrees through the weekend.
Freezing temperatures will drop to about 10,500 feet on Friday, meaning some high country locations will see the rain change into snow as early as Friday morning.
Locations such as Rocky Mountain National Park, the Indian Peaks Wilderness, Berthoud Pass, and Mount Evans could see several inches of snow.
Communities along the Peak to Peak Highway such as Nederland, Ward, Allenspark, and Estes Park could also see snow but very little accumulation.

Arctic ice refuses to melt as ordered

15 Aug 08 - The Arctic melt season is nearly done for this year.
The sun is very low above the horizon and will set for the winter
at the North Pole in five weeks. And none of the dire predictions
of melting ice have come to pass.

So true !   As far as I know, the hoax ended last year for the most part. Rush Limbaugh had some good soundbites on this topic.  They went crazy over GW last spring 2007, then it all crumbled after that.  Smiley

People waking up to SNOW in Colorado this morning.. Heck,, it is the middle of August.. Hand that one to Global Warming!!!

http://amfone.net/Amforum/index.php?topic=16819.0

Someone please ask Al Gore what he is doing to prevent Global Warming.. You'd think that with all his money he would have all of the state of the art solar power equipment installed in all of his homes and offices..

Oh,, wait,, he pays carbon credits to the company that he owns..  Wink :Smiley

New Zealand lifts buried in giant snowfall

19 Aug 08 - Mt Ruapehu in the Central Plateau received the biggest snowfall in more than 20 years, staff said. They had to shovel off more than two metres of snow that had gathered on service building roofs, threatening to collapse them.

The dump was so heavy, it buried the snow stake used to measure snowfall.

Some snow-buried lifts were closed - but both ski-fields now boast snow bases of almost four metres.

Staff at Whakapapa and Turoa ski-fields have reported on their website that they are "snowed under" with work, with patrollers on "the immense task of avalanche control whilst everyone else will be digging".

MetService spokesman Bob McDavitt said around 80cm of fresh snow had fallen on central North Island mountains in the past week and a metre or more on the Southern Alps - with more to come.

Mr McDavitt said a severe weather warning was in place for more snow till about midday today.

Record snow at NZ ski resorts  19 Aug 08 -

Huge snowfalls have been recorded on both the north and south
islands of New Zealand. Turoa now has the biggest snow base in the history of commercial skiing in the country.

Some buildings were completely buried during the storm
(pic c/o www.www.mtruapehu.com)

The resort's snow stake at 2000m above sea level now officially measures 455cm and Whakapapa is also entering record territory at 350cm, the most since 1994.

The huge storm blew in last Wednesday night and lasted over the weekend, dropping over a metre of new snow. In Turoa so much snow has fallen in the last few days that the measuring stick was buried and needed to be extended before an accurate reading could be given !

The Whakapapa side of the mountain also had 350cm of snow, the biggest since 1995.

Mt Hutt reported a 267cm snow base.
